Having been raised in Northern California, I spent my early years surfing at many of the most famous surf spots in the world. Places where the old-fashioned “Woody” surf van was a common sight. So I guess it’s only natural that I began making custom wooden surfboards as a sort of artistic “therapy” in order to shake off the stress of the work day and immerse myself in the simplicity of creating each surfboard’s sleek lines by using the natural beauty of wood. In a way, it takes me back to those days when all your needed was a great wave and a sturdy board to feel a peace with your life as you paddled out watching a beautiful sunrise, and feeling the excitement that only surfing can offer.
My life’s career in the oil business world is balanced by the time I spend in my Woodlands, Tx workshop designing custom boards. Each one is unique…made by combining woods such as mahogany, walnut, cherry, pine or exotic woods in order to create a warm, rich look and feel. My travels often take me to places like Hawaii, where I can find unique woods such a Koa to work with.
There is just something really beautiful about the earthiness of wood. It enhances anything that is made from it. Each piece has its own unique coloring and texture. I find it very satisfying to take the woods that grow freely in nature and create a piece of artwork that will not only add beauty to your home, but also take you to another place where you can almost see that perfect wave.
